Apprenticeship description

The training of wood industry specialists takes account of the changed requirements in the wood industry. The new training places greater emphasis on integrating the further processing of sawn timber by gluing and planing, teaching plant technology and IT topics and direct customer contact.

Tasks and responsibilities

Wood industry specialists operate and maintain state-of-the-art cutting and conveyor systems. They use these to process, dry and store the logs delivered from the forest. They use it to produce boards, squared timber and battens. As a wood industry specialist, you calculate quantities, yields, machine hours and prices. You will also advise customers on the selection of sawn timber.

Development opportunities

  • Work in a sawmill and planing mill as a highly qualified wood industry specialist with a federal certificate of competence
  • Specialization with courses from technical and vocational schools, industry associations, the Bern University of Applied Sciences for Architecture, Wood and Construction
  • Follow-up training to become a wood specialist with a federal certificate of competence
  • With vocational baccalaureate during or after basic training: Further training to become a qualified technician specializing in the wood industry at a higher technical college
  • With a vocational baccalaureate during or after basic training: Bachelor of Science (FH) in wood technology at a university of applied sciences
