The innovative construction project Wisdome Stockholm at the National Museum of Science and Technology, designed by Elding Oscarson Architektur in collaboration with the engineering firm of Florian Kosche, has been awarded the 2023 Kasper Salin Architecture Prize. Architects Sweden, the Swedish architects association, awards this prize every year to Swedish buildings of high quality.

Innovative design advances timber construction

The spectacular building consists of a domed theatre with 3D cinema housed in a wooden structure with a curved, Free Form roof that spans an area of 48 x 25 metres without any columns. The jury particularly lauded the completely new solution for the roof structure, which advances the field of timber construction and enables impressive spans.

Traditional craftsmanship and state-of-the-art technology

In devising the structural solution for the roof construction, the project team was inspired by a traditional technique from 18th century bridge building. Together with the timber construction engineers from SJB Kempter Fitze with Hermann Blumer for the engineering and the parametric planners from Design-to-Production for the geometry, the timber construction specialists developed an innovative lattice shell construction. The design was brought to fruition using detailed mock-ups, parametric planning tools and state-of-the-art 5-axis CNC technology.
