Tree-like roof structures for a bus station

Tom Munz Architekt*innen devised the architectural concept for the roof of the new bus station in Amriswil. It picks up on the image of the canopy of leaves formed by the groups of trees on the station square. The Free Form timber support structure provides clear orientation and offers shade and protection from the weather. Blumer Lehmann built the timber construction in a consortium with Krattiger Holzbau.

Three roofs at different heights and slight angles to each other span the new bus station. Together, they form an area of 540 m2 and overlap in such a way that passengers can board and disembark at all stops protected from the weather. Two tree-like supports hold up each of the three roofs. Each support consists of single-curved laminated timber beams. The beams branch out at the top and merge into the curved roof structure, which is comprised of laminated timber beams on which the flat CLT elements rest. Glued at the ends using TS3 technology, they form a continuous roof surface. Skylights positioned centrally above the tree supports let light in beneath the roofs. The three roofs differ slightly in their geometry and together cover around 540 square metres.
