Appenzeller Huus residential and holiday complex

The new buildings contain hotel rooms, owner-occupied apartments and holiday apartments, as well as wellness rooms. The entire site of the new development has a basement level, which forms part of the hotel complex and includes an underground car park. In addition, an underground connection to Hotel Löwen was built under the main road.

A consortium of seven regional timber construction companies was commissioned with the timber construction of the new buildings, which are up to five storeys high. Planning work for the first building began at the end of 2023, and handover of the last of the five new buildings to the client is scheduled for late summer 2026.

Special ceiling system and traditional ‘Strickbau’ (layered wood) technique
The ceiling system developed especially for the project uses load-bearing solid timber planks for the exposed ceiling. Some of the non-load-bearing interior walls have been built using the ‘Strickbau’ (layered wood) technique. Local wood from the Appenzellerland region is being used on the walls and ceilings. In addition to its role as a consortium partner, Blumer Lehmann has been contracted to plan and produce three Free Form pavilions for the wellness area.

Solid timber with digital proof of origin
Thanks to the proof of origin from Urstamm, the solid timber used in the Appenzeller Huus construction project can be traced precisely and transparently. This makes it possible to verify where it came from and when it was felled. For this purpose, the timber is recorded immediately after felling with its GPS coordinates, along with the time and date, and it is numbered, digitised and archived securely.
