Natural and sustainable temporary school building

Some 140 children will learn and play in the modular school building Grenzhof, Lucerne, for a period of around five years. The temporary school building is constructed from timber modules and will bridge the planning and construction period for the new Rönnimoos school grounds.

We delivered the modular construction with its six classrooms, nursery, various subject rooms and service and support facilities as full-service general contractor. The process from factory assembly to completion of the timber construction took five months. The modular construction was handed over to the client, teachers and pupils moved into the three-storey modular school building with its floor area of almost 3,000 m2.

10 days after the start of the assembly, all 112 timber modules were already installed on the strip foundations with the special modular steel support elements. The City of Lucerne had particularly high standards when it came to the ecology and energy efficiency of the construction. The objective was for the temporary building to obtain Minergie certification, which assesses and recognises energy efficiency combined with health and construction ecology. This was why an air-to-water heat pump was installed at the school building for heat production. A photovoltaic system on the flat roof, which is partially covered with greenery, contributes towards energy production. And the interior finishing uses sustainable construction materials, such as linoleum flooring and wooden panels for the internal walls. The ceilings are clad with wood wool acoustic panels. The 810 m2 facade is made using vertical pre-greyed, rough-cut spruce wood in lava grey and open cladding.
