Modular timber construction for in-school childcare

Bauart Architekten und Planer AG has designed a modular school construction system for the city of Winterthur that can be used in different locations. Blumer Lehmann planned and built the ‘Modular W’ modular timber constructions.  The modules are highly prefabricated and equipped with electrical, water and heating installations. They can be stacked up to three storeys high. A shared two-storey modular timber construction was erected for the Wiesenstrasse and Wülflingerstrasse schools, providing additional space for in-school childcare. The extension meets the Minergie P Eco standard and provides space for 250 children. The configuration includes: 3 childcare rooms, 2 canteens, 5 group rooms, 1 office, 1 kitchen.

The kitchen and the two canteens are located on the ground floor. From here, an exit on the side of the building leads directly to the playground. Upstairs there are six rooms of varying sizes in which the schoolchildren can play and do their homework. The floor plan and the technical equipment are designed in such a way that the rooms can also be used later as classrooms or group rooms.
