Osterather Strasse Catholic Primary School

Osterather Strasse Catholic Primary School in Cologne is located in an area where residential development is revitalising a traditional commercial district. The City of Cologne is addressing the rising demand for school places by constructing modular, timber-frame schools. 

As the design-and-build contractor, Blumer Lehmann was responsible for the construction of the two-storey school building. Providing a floor area of 1,582 m², the modular building accommodates five classrooms, three daycare rooms, a group room, staff rooms, an office, as well as ancillary rooms, a kitchen and a canteen with seating for 150 people. 

The school extension adds a standalone timber building to a mixed, organically grown school complex. The exposed timber construction creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere, while the educational concept supports diverse forms of learning and interaction. 

The extension building combines high design quality with sustainable construction principles. An energy-efficient building facade, a rooftop photovoltaic system, and the use of timber as a renewable building material all contribute to a high energy efficiency standard. The planning stage ran from 2022 to 2023, and the building was commissioned in June 2026.
