The Buchs town centre now boasts an urban living space with a total of 156 apartments in timber construction. Blumer Lehmann was responsible for the construction of three of the seven buildings in a consortium with Alpiger Holzbau.
The three residential buildings with 2.5- to 4.5-room apartments were commissioned by Mettler Entwickler AG, St. Gallen. The aim was to create high-quality living space for owners and tenants in the heart of Buchs.
Zurich-based architects Baumschlager Hutter Partners designed a living environment that harmonises with the nearby mountains and natural surrounds, while also presenting a vivid contrast to the adjacent Buchs Railway Station.
Blumer Lehmann worked with Alpiger Holzbau to build the timber-concrete hybrid residential complex. The exterior and interior walls were supplied as prefabricated elements. The ceiling structures are made of horizontal laminated timber and were delivered in robust timber-concrete hybrid construction. The roof constructions were also made of horizontal laminated timber. The supporting structure is a traditional arrangement of columns and beams. Due to the enhanced structural requirements, ash was chosen for the load-bearing components.
The size of the project posed a particular logistical challenge, but the prefabricated elements enabled quick, efficient erection. The prefabricated construction also increased weather protection during installation.
