Saatlen school

The Saatlen school complex, currently under construction in Zurich’s Schwamendingen district, will be the city’s largest, catering for a total of 970 children. The winning project by Bollhalder Walser Architektur consists of three timber constructions of different sizes. As a consortium partner, Blumer Lehmann is producing interior walls, providing assembly personnel and cutting out some of the three-ply panels for the wood-concrete composite ceilings.

On the 30,000 m² site in the Saatlen residential district, the existing school buildings of the Saatlen day school will be replaced with new buildings by the time construction is completed in 2028. The primary school, secondary school and school for children and young people with physical and multiple disabilities (SKB) will each have their own premises spread across three new school buildings. There will also be rooms for the Musikschule Konservatorium Zürich, a triple and single-size sports hall, a school swimming pool and canteens to serve around 1100 meals a day.

The buildings will be erected using solid construction methods up to the ground floor, and using prefabricated construction methods with wood-concrete composite ceilings from the first floor upwards. To ensure increased sound insulation between the classrooms, most interior walls will have a double-skin design. The walls will be joined at the factory in Gossau using fully threaded screws, which will only be removed after installation. This halves the number of crane motions required during installation and makes assembly easier.
