The pop-up secondary school, which we completed back in 2018, was extended in 2022. As the general contractor, we added a single-court sports hall with side rooms using modular timber and prefabricated timber construction.
In keeping with the temporary character of the sports hall, its facade is clad with transparent, corrugated fibreglass panels. The hall architecture – based on the designs by pool Architekten – also showcases the vertical structure of the timber construction as the primary visual feature. The interior finishing consists of timber boarding and visible cross-laminated timber boards.
The timber construction comprised of modules and elements satisfies accessibility and safety requirements, while its re-usability means that economic viability is also ensured. In addition, the sports hall achieves the Minergie-A-ECO standard for construction and building technology. A PV system to meet the construction’s own power needs will be installed on the roof of the hall and extensive greenery will be added to the roof of the adjacent building.
The temporary single-court sports hall for Uetikon cantonal school was developed on the basis of a separate service contract within the framework contract for the ‘Temporary sports facility for the Education Department of the Canton of Zurich‘. Uetikon is its first location, where it is expected to see roughly eight years of use.
