Pestalozzi School extension using prefabricated timber construction

The extension consists of six new classrooms, a canteen with a kitchen and adjoining rooms, a staff room, sanitary facilities for students and three toilets, two of which are for teachers and one is accessible. The two-storey school building was constructed as a prefabricated timber structure and handed over to the client in turnkey condition on 5 March 2025. Headmistress Michaela Ohse-Beck is thrilled with the rapid construction period and, along with the school community, is delighted about the additional space at the four-form primary school, which was urgently needed. The planning process, including implementation planning, prefabrication and assembly, took only around eight months. This relatively short construction time and excellent cost-effectiveness were made possible by the high degree of prefabrication of the building and the joint commitment of the client and Blumer Lehmann to rise to the challenge.

The external walls of the new school building were built using timber frame construction. The internal walls and ceilings are made of cross-laminated timber (CLT), with as many visible timber surfaces as possible left exposed. This ensures a healthy indoor climate in which schoolchildren and teachers feel at ease.

The facade design, with uniform window placement and vertical, green-varnished larch cladding, defines the external appearance of the school extension. Energy is generated by an air-to-water heat pump and distributed throughout the building via the underfloor heating.
