With the “Aquabox”, an extraordinary infrastructure project has become a reality in Stuttgart. The indoor pool ensures that swimming and bathing facilities remain available in Zuffenhausen during the construction phase of the new district pool. Subsequently, the facility will be relocated to Möhringen before reaching its permanent location in Untertürkheim.

46 timber modules from the factory in Germany

The two-storey building, which houses a foyer, changing rooms, sanitary facilities, staff rooms, and utility rooms, was built by Blumer Lehmann. A total of 46 prefabricated timber modules were manufactured in the German plant and delivered to the construction site as ready-to-assemble spatial units.

Planned for dismantling right from the start

The most distinctive feature of the “Aquabox” lies in its life cycle. While conventional buildings are designed for a fixed site, future relocations were already taken into account during the development phase.

The principle of “Designed for Disassembly – Built to Last” characterizes the entire project. Screwed connections replace permanent bonding, building components can be dismantled, and technical systems were designed so that they can be reused at new locations.

Modular timber buildings are well established in many sectors today. However, Blumer Lehmann entered new territory with this modular timber indoor pool. An indoor swimming pool is among the most technically demanding building types of all. High humidity, a chlorine-containing atmosphere, different climate zones, and complex building services place the highest demands on the construction and the building envelope.

A system for many requirements

With the “Aquabox” in Stuttgart, the first indoor pool designed and implemented using the POOL out of the BOX system is going into operation. As an exclusive partner, Blumer Lehmann is responsible for the development of the timber construction. The underlying system is scalable: building size, pools, and equipment can be tailored to meet different municipal requirements.
