The school of tomorrow is modular and mobile

Together with Blumer Lehmann, architects from the Building Management department at the District Office of Tempelhof-Schöneberg in Berlin are working on a new type of mobile schoolhouse. Two identical versions of the planned school project were being built at different locations in the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district.

‘It’s a pilot project for both sides,’ says Andreas Spieß of the District Office of Tempelhof-Schöneberg, before going on to add: ‘If the result of the simplified single-storey pilot is satisfactory, it’ll be time to move on to the next stage of the “flying classroom”, DFK 2.0.’ It is designed to allow for different, even narrower building shapes, multiple storeys and an individual room layout. Assembly work at Schulenburgring in the Tempelhof-Schöneberg district was completed at the end of 2018. The schoolhouse on Konradinstrasse was ready for use in early 2019. Six large and two small classrooms, side rooms for teachers, a small kitchen, a filing cupboard, a technical room and toilets are housed in a single-storey modular construction with a larch facade.
